Note to conservatives: most of you are all liberal by definition.

> Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on liberty, consent of the governed and equality before the law. Liberals espouse a wide array of views depending on their understanding of these principles, but they generally support free markets, free trade, limited government, individual rights (including civil rights and human rights), capitalism, democracy, secularism, gender equality, racial equality, internationalism, freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom of religion.

People don't like thoughtful posts either, because of the addictive culture. I see this post as being largely ignored as well.

@jwinnie I'm starting to agree with you more in relation to this topic.

I do wonder: can we actually change anything, or is this fundamentally built into social media?

Show thread

I notice that conversation and engagement in online circles deteriorates over time, becoming less valuable and productive.

Feelings are stimulated and we are left wanting. Social media has a correlation with depression, and I believe that to be the lack of fulfilling dialogue.

There is little substance to what many of us post. We scramble to say things and "consume" things that get people's attention for a short moment before looking for more.

This drives addiction which leads to problems of all kinds, which includes depression. We want more and more of this "substance" that we begin to let it take over. And we are left disappointed and looking for more. It is the same as any other addiction in this way.

We need discipline. We need to encourage one another rather than just amuse one another. Can we help each other this way?

Anyone have recommendations on resources for learning French?

My goal is to be able to read French literature. I am fairly good at understanding grammar and am not afraid of formal rules (as I've discovered when learning Serbian).

Compiling Rust code is warming my lap.

I pieced that together with a dictionary and some conjugation. I do notice some grammatical errors now, including the lack of an article before "français".

The corporate surveillance machine is conducting murder at scale

> I have never been angrier about the corporate surveillance complex, which I have rallied against for years, than I am today. Buying and selling user’s private information on the open market is bad enough for the obvious reasons, but today, I learned that the depths of depravity this market will descend to are without limit. Today I am more angry and ashamed at this industry than I have ever been. Corporate surveillance and adtech has turned your phone into an informant against you and brought about the actual **murder** of the user.

@jbauer Are your pronouns "Any are fine." or are they "any/are/fine"? :P

Regardless of the political leanings of Facebook itself, it appears that its algorithms increase engagement of certain types of sources.

I'm glad Gab stopped federating, but it is just another example of them not caring about decentralization or open source.

Do other Gab instances still federate with each other? Or have they completely broken federation?

The answer turned out to be 9. Congrats to the 33% (3 people) who predicted it accurately.

Full disclosure, I have about $2.9 worth of Bitcoin. So I'm *totally* invested in it.

Just let me know if Bitcoin suddenly spikes a thousandfold. :P

There are so many people on the Fediverse both adamantly pro or against cryptocurrencies, bitcoin, and blockchain. It can be entertaining.

How many votes in this poll do you think we can get in 30 minutes?
